Before Your Shoot: A Photoshoot Preparation Checklist

We talk a lot about photoshoot prep in this blog. This week’s post is a little bit special, it’s a quick checklist (a cheat sheet if you will, haha) walking you through each stage of photoshoot preparation, so you can relax knowing you’ve got everything covered and organised.

A photoshoot preparation checklist:

1. Have a clear vision

1.1 The WHY

First thing’s first, know your big why… Why are you doing a photoshoot? Why are you doing it now?

The PURPOSE

What is it for? What are you going to use your images for?

1.3 HOW do you want to see yourself?

A photoshoot experience is not about capturing the everyday version of you. It’s all about portraying your best and most fabulous self. So you look back at your images, and think “that’s me, I can be that fabulous”.

Dig deeper developing a vision for your shoot, and this post – The Biggest mistake to avoid when planning a photoshoot – will be a great helping hand on getting a clear idea of your perfect photo session.

2. Get Creative

2.1 HOW do you want to be photographed?

Where will your dream shoot take place? Who do you want to be photographed with? Think about all the ideas, and let your imagination go wild – it’s your photoshoot. It’s all about you.

2.2 Get inspired

Mood-boards are so often neglected. We tend to forget things – when it’s gone, it’s gone forever. I would really encourage you to find images that inspire you for your shoot and save them all in one place. Creating a mood-board will be ideal. Try browsing Pinterest, it’s the ultimate source for inspiration!

3. Communicate your vision

When it comes to communication, nothing beats a visual representation of your concept/vision than a collection of images. Share the mood-board with your photographer and seek advice and guidance on what’s feasible and what needs more planning.

4. Time to get ready!

When it comes to getting ready, it’s quite individual specific. Though you can break it down into the following sections:

4.1 Photoshoot ready body

Depending the purpose for your photos, you might want to add a few tweaks to your workout routine and nutrition leading up to your photo session.

4.2 Beauty prep

Photographers are certainly magicians, but natural-looking glowing skin always looks better than a retouch.

4.3 Decide how to do your makeup for a photoshoot

Should you hire a professional MUA or do it yourself?

4.4 Choose what to wear for a photoshoot

Should you buy, hire, or borrow your outfits? Explore the options available and pick the most flattering clothing.

4.5 Get your hair photoshoot-ready

Get a fresh trim and plan your hair looks in advance.

4.6 Plan your photo-posing

Make sure you include some posing ideas in your mood board too! Theres always this awkward moment of “what do I do now? How do I pose next?” Be prepared for every aspect.

5. Get your mind ready

If it’s your first time preparing for a professional photoshoot, you might feel awkward, scared, unsure, etc. It’s okay, we all feel this way before doing something for the first time.

At this point of your photoshoot preparation, you need to lift your spirits. Do anything to feel as good as you can about yourself on the day – read affirmations, listen to uplifting music and podcasts…
